Zhu is currently taking online English courses to improve his command of the language as he looks for bookkeeping work.
He has Spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3), a condition that makes it difficult for him to put in the time to study and work towards employment.
鈥淚 often lose my balance, and easily fall down. I suffer from back pain, can鈥檛 sit down long time,鈥 he explains. 鈥淚t is better for me to stand a while.鈥
He has been working with WorkBC Employment Services for his job search, and was referred to WorkBC Assistive Technology Services for assistive technology supports.
Zhu worked with a WorkBC Assistive Technology Services occupational therapist to identify supports that would benefit him.
Through WorkBC Assistive Technology Services, Zhu received an ergonomic chair, a power height adjustable workstation, an external monitor and monitor arm, a USB-C adapter, a power bar with a long cord for safety, a wireless headset, a laptop stand, and a wireless keyboard and mouse.
The accommodations have made his online English courses much easier to participate in, and he is hoping to pass an exam and assessment in the next year.
鈥淚 am happy and comfortable,鈥 he shares. 鈥淚 can learn English online and not be tired.鈥
With his prospects looking bright, Zhu says he would recommend WorkBC Assistive Technology Services to others in need.
WorkBC Assistive Technology Services is operated by Neil Squire. Assistive Technology Services are available to individuals who have a work-related barrier due to a disability or a functional limitation. This may include barriers related to traveling to and from the workplace.
