Sally, who currently resides in Grandmother鈥檚 Bay, Saskatchewan, has known she has the learning disabilities dyscalculia and dysgraphia for over 15 years. As a result, she finds learning easier by verbal direction and by being shown how to complete a task.
During her time in Grandmother鈥檚 Bay, Sally has pushed herself to obtain numerous certifications, such as First Aid and CPR, as well as Employment Readiness.
Sally heard about Neil Squire through the Gary Tinker Federation, and joined the Working Together program in November to get help finding meaningful employment in an area she was interested in.
When Sally first began the job development process, she was eager to learn and try new career paths. While working with her Job Developer, she learned the importance of a properly formatted resume, as well as the proper format to have for cover letters when trying to make the best impression in a job application.
Sally then learned about various interview etiquette such as proper clothing and showing up 10 minutes before an interview is scheduled to start. Sally reviewed common interview questions and learned how the STAR technique can be utilized when answering behavioral based interview questions. She was also given tips on how to disclose her disabilities if she ever chooses to in the future.
A Dental Aide position became available in her community and Sally wasted no time getting her employment documents ready and submitted, using her self-marketing skills to set her aside from other applicants.
It was not long before Sally was invited to interview for the position. She was nervous but spent additional time practicing her responses to interview questions prior to the actual interview. Sally鈥檚 hard work and determination helped her impress at her interview, and she was offered full-time employment as a Dental Aide.
Sally is responsible for preparing patients and assisting Dental Therapists during procedures, sanitizing her workspace, and being friendly and inviting to clients who visit. Sally enjoys her new position and the self-confidence it has brought into her life. She says she is grateful for all the help she received at Neil Squire and is thankful to be employed doing something meaningful to her.
