Meet Our New Chapter: Miles Macdonell Collegiate

April 1, 2021

We鈥檙e happy to announce another new Makers Making Change聽, this one in Winnipeg, Manitoba.聽, of the聽, is the site of our newest chapter. Miles Macdonell technology teachers Samantha-Rae Adamson and Cyrus Gervais-Tourangeau are the chapter leaders, but it鈥檚 really a student-led initiative.

Miles Macdonell Collegiate

鈥淚 had a couple kids who volunteered at the Manitoba Tech Summit last year, and there they met [Makers Making Change Central Region Coordinator] Suzanne [Winterflood],鈥聽explains Samantha.聽鈥淭he students took the lead.鈥

Miles Macdonell has a Hack Club, which sees students collaborate in programming, game development, among other activities. The student leaders of that club wanted to get involved with Makers Making Change to be more involved in the community.

鈥淚 think it鈥檚 a good way for them to do something, since this last year they haven鈥檛 really been able to do anything 鈥 do something that actually has an impact 鈥 I think鈥檚 really gonna boost their moods,鈥聽she continues.

鈥淚 think it鈥檚 more just about helping people,鈥聽says Cyrus.聽鈥淚 think they鈥檙e just eager to do something for others.鈥

The students are currently trying to find partnerships in the community and programs to work with.

While the chapter is just starting, the school has two 3D printers. Prior to the pandemic, the school regularly hosted Hackathons that were well attended, and the chapter is looking to host a Buildathon of their own in the next couple of months.
