Malachi Is Passionate About His New Job

June 25, 2024

Malachi, who lives in the Northern Saskatchewan community of La Ronge, was born with a mild cognitive impairment and requires assistance when he is asked to do more than one or two tasks at a time. Malachi knew he learned best from repetition, and with that understanding, he set out to find an accommodating employer.

With assistance from the Creative Employment Options team, Malachi enhanced his resume and learned to write and format a proper cover letter. He learned about the importance of making a good first impression and using the STAR (situation, task, action, result) method to answer difficult behaviour-based questions.

Malachi gained insights on networking, including the hidden job market, and how to use informational interviews and cold calls to make connections and job search in his community.

He participated in a discussion regarding maintaining his physical and mental wellness by making time for hobbies, drinking enough water, eating healthy, and going for walks. He takes health and safety seriously and recognizes keeping himself and those around him safe at work is a core strength.

Malachi had previous experience stocking shelves, but noted that he likes to help keep his community clean by picking up garbage in his spare time, so it was fitting that he took an interest in working with the local waste management company.

In April, he interviewed there, and soon after, he accepted a Yard Assistant job offer. Malachi now manages litter and vegetation on-site at the landfill, assists the other yard attendants with sorting waste and recyclables, and assists customers in emptying loads.

At his new job, he gets to live his passion for keeping his community clean. With the help of the Creative Employment Options program, Malachi is now equipped with the skills to excel at his new job.
