Maker Spotlight: Garry Bartsch

May 12, 2021

Garry Bartsch is an inventor like his father before him.

鈥淭hat鈥檚 in my blood, I guess,鈥聽he says from Edmonton, Alberta.聽鈥淚鈥檝e always liked drawing things, and I鈥檝e always liked designing things, and it鈥檚 been a hobby 鈥 it鈥檚 enjoyable, but it鈥檚 also useful to me.鈥

As a C5-C6 quadriplegic, 3D printing gives Garry an avenue to create.

鈥淚鈥檝e been 3D printing for seven years now, and I really like it, because I can鈥檛 do things with my hands 鈥 I can type, and I can operate a computer, but I can鈥檛 really make anything 鈥 but with the printer, I can just design things on聽聽and then the printer makes stuff.鈥

Garry smilingHe started with an聽聽3D printer, before upgrading five years ago to a聽聽kit, which he built with his daughter. His current 3D printer, however, he designed himself, with the help of his friends Mike and John, as well as his daughters.

Garry鈥檚 been printing his inventions that he uses himself, and for his friends.

Recently, Garry has also been dedicating his 3D printing talents to printing devices for Makers Making Change.

He has printed seven聽, as well as providing Makers Making Change with a great deal of聽, which help other makers test their devices as they are building them.

鈥淚 like printing,鈥聽he shares.聽鈥淚鈥檓 kind of fussy, because I like to make a really nice print that鈥檚 gonna be strong and doesn鈥檛 look horrible, like there鈥檚 people that can print better than me, but I鈥檓 fussy, I like to do my best, I like a challenge.鈥

He says printing is a team effort for him, as his friends and family help him greatly.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a very collaborative effort, like I just couldn鈥檛 do it without all the help that I get,鈥聽he says.聽鈥淚f my friends didn鈥檛 help me make the machine and keep it running, if my kids didn鈥檛 help me take parts off the printer when they鈥檙e stuck too hard, fix some things, or swapping plastic, if my wife didn鈥檛 put up with my spending all the money on the stuff, it wouldn鈥檛 happen.鈥

Any tips for those looking to get into 3D printing?

鈥淵ou need to have some CAD software, you need to have a computer, you need to be able to operate a computer, you鈥檒l need slicer software, most of that鈥檚 free 鈥 you can pay for them too, but you can find free ones,鈥聽he shares.

鈥淚 just learned on my own, reading forum posts, now there鈥檚 tons on聽, you can learn almost anything, so now is a good time if anybody is interested because there鈥檚 so much help available.

鈥淎nd the machines have improved a lot over seven years. There鈥檚 a lot of really good machines, now you can buy a聽聽and start using it, it鈥檚 probably gonna work right away, or an聽, they鈥檙e not expensive machines, but they do a good job.鈥
