“It May Seem Like a Small Thing, but It’s a Huge Gift”

Marie is a retired teacher who used to work with children with disabilities. Now she has limited mobility, strength, dexterity, and endurance, and needs help doing some tasks.

A hand using a Bottle Opener to open a bottle of apple juice.“Now I am disabled and am in need for others to help me. I feel like this circle of life has changed, and now I am the student learning how to adapt to life and cope with the multiple challenges of old age and disability,” she shares.

One day watching a YouTube video by an occupational therapist, she learned about and a library of assistive devices that she could request a maker to make for her.

She browsed the library and thought the would be quite helpful to open drinks like a bottle of tea. Marie connected with a maker and had a Bottle Opener made and shipped to her for just the cost of materials and shipping.

“I have been provided with a tool so that I do not have to ask someone every single day so I can have my tea or water,” she says. “It may seem like a small thing, but it’s a huge gift. You won’t understand until you need it.”

Marie praises the maker and the Makers Making Change community.

“The priceless value of Makers Making Change is the caring extended to total strangers in helping enrich their lives,” she says.

“My maker didn’t know me, yet he treated me like a precious grandmother and used his skills in technology to fashion a tool I need every remaining day of my human life.”
