SUMMARY:NYC Metro: Custom Keyguard Design Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this virtual workshop as we learn how to create 3D design files of custom keyguards. A keyguard is a physical overlay or barrier placed on a touchscreen device to assist users in accurately selecting desired areas of the screen. These overlays can help individuals with motor or cognitive impairments by providing physical boundaries around the selectable elements on the screen\, reducing accidental selections\, and improving accuracy during communication. Keyguards in AAC apps can be customized to fit the specific layout of symbols or buttons\, allowing users to interact with the app more effectively and independently. \nDuring this workshop\, we will walk through the process of starting with an app screenshot and creating a custom keyguard using聽Volksswitch鈥檚 Keyguard Designer. The workshop will cover the various customization and mounting options. \nThe target audience includes speech therapists\, occupational therapists\, assistive technology professionals\, and 3D design engineers. All skill levels are welcome to attend. For this workshop\, you will need to have access to the following: \n\nComputer with:\nOpenSCAD聽installed\nInkscape聽installed\nDownloaded聽design files\nScreenshot of the desired AAC app layout (taken from the device)\nRuler with mm measurements\n\nReview the聽Getting ready to do keyguard design video聽to learn how to install the needed software and set up your files and folders. Please note\, for Mac users\, you may need to right click on the software icon and select 鈥淥pen鈥� from the dropdown menu in order to bypass security features given this software is not from an identified developer. You will only need to complete this step the first time you launch the program. \nPresenters \nGemma White聽is an SLP with over 20 years of experience working with AAC. She graduated from the University College London as a Speech Therapist in 2000. Gemma has served on the AAC SIG12: PDC and is a member of RCSLT UK. Gemma developed applications and shared her clinical expertise presenting for Apple\, and numerous CE courses for SLP鈥檚\, AT professionals\, including formultidisciplinary at ATIA and ASHA. She is currently the Clinical Coordinator at WIHD Assistive Technology Program and Speech Department\, NY. \n\nKen Hackbarth聽is the founder and president of聽Volksswitch.org聽(www.volksswitch.org) 鈥� an organization devoted to the democratization of assistive technology by leveraging the power and promise of 3D printing. Prior to this current position he worked for almost three decades as a systems architect for AT&T Bell Laboratories and its subsequent divestitures. He has a Master of Science in Evolutionary Biology and a Master of Science in Systems Engineering from the University of Arizona\, and a Master of Education in Special Education\, with a concentration in assistive technology\, from Bowling Green State University.

SUMMARY:2024 Indigenous Disability & Wellness Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Neil Squire is a proud sponsor and staff from across the province will be at the 2024 Indigenous Disability & Wellness Gathering. \nThe 2024 Gathering will be held at the Victoria Conference Center from November 19th 鈥� November 21st\, 2024\, on the ancestral lands of the Lekwungen Peoples. We will be celebrating Indigenous Disability Canada鈥檚 (IDC) / British Columbia Aboriginal Network on Disability Society鈥檚 (BCANDS鈥�) 31st anniversary and the 10th anniversary of Indigenous Disability Awareness Month (IDAM) being recognized and proclaimed. \nThe Gathering brings together Indigenous and non-Indigenous governments\, leadership\, service providers\, community members\, and others to learn\, connect\, and collaborate in addressing the unique barriers Indigenous Peoples with disabilities face. We will continue to take the necessary steps to dismantle historical and current barriers and the attitudes and perceptions that negatively impact Indigenous Peoples living with disabilities. By forming new and expanded partnerships\, we can collaborate and identify the best practices for the broader disability and health sectors. \nTogether\, we will help shape a Canada that is inclusive and responsive to the needs of all peoples and abilities. \nWhy should we gather together?\nIndigenous Peoples living with a disability often face many unique jurisdictional barriers\, restrictive policies\, and discrimination when seeking necessary support for their specific disability-related needs. These factors\, and others\, contribute to the exclusion and the lack of recognition of Indigenous Peoples living with a disability as equal members of our society. This population continues to be marginalized\, with the worldwide pandemic further amplifying these conditions. \nStatistics Canada notes that the frequency of disabilities among Indigenous Peoples is higher than the national average\, which is conservatively estimated at 30%. Other research suggests the overall disability rates for Indigenous Peoples in Canada are up to three times higher than the national rate within some age groups. It is also known that the prevalence of disabilities and the likelihood of becoming disabled for Indigenous women in impoverished populations significantly increases. DESCRIPTION:Makers Making Change is excited to be a part of Worlds UNBound Go ENG Girl event! \nRegistration is required. \nGo ENG Girl invites girls in grades 7-12 to dive into the exciting world of engineering with a day packed full of creative\, hands-on activities and cool exhibits. Meet and learn from inspiring female-identifying engineers\, students\, and professors who are eager to share their journeys\, passions\, and triumphs in engineering! \nThis event is free for all participants and includes food\, swag and more! \nThis year Go ENG Girl is partnering with Makers Making Change\, a Neil Squire Program\, for the Hacking for the Holidays initiative. \nIn this workshop\, participants will be led in adapting toys聽for use with an assistive switch. For many kids with disabilities\, toys can be hard to use independently\, and commercially adapted versions can run upwards of $300. However\, with a little bit of tinkering\, we can switch-adapt toys and make them accessible for a fraction of the cost. \nNeil Squire鈥檚聽Makers Making Change聽staff and volunteers are experts at hacking battery operated toys\, taking them apart\, and adding in the switch jacks. Skills learned during this workshop include soldering and assembly\, as well as an introduction to assistive technology\, person centred design and community involvement.

Never done anything like this before? Don鈥檛 worry\, no prior experience working with tools or electronics is required 鈥� we鈥檒l walk you through every step. Everyone is welcome. \nWhy is this so important?\nEvery child deserves to play. But for many kids with disabilities\, toys can be hard to use independently\, and commercially adapted versions can run upwards of $300. However\, with a little bit of tinkering\, we can switch-adapt toys and make them accessible for a fraction of the cost. \nThe event is part of our Hacking for the Holidays campaign.
