Donna was looking to get back into the workforce when she joined the Creative Employment Options (new window) program.
Last year, Donna was hit by a car, which left her unable to work for a while and caused a memory disorder, preventing her from retaining information when she reads. She incurred nerve damage to her foot and in her leg, where her tibia is held together with a metal plate and screw. Donna now experiences migraines and PTSD. She was also previously diagnosed with dyslexia.
One of Donna鈥檚 first tasks was updating her resume and learning how to tailor cover letters to job ads. She practiced tailoring cover letters so much that she reached a point where there were very few mistakes when she sent them to her Job Developer for feedback.
She learned to tap into the hidden job market through marketing, cold calling, and informational interviews.
Donna was able to develop wellness techniques and participated in a mock interview. She found herself gaining more self-esteem and confidence with interviews from that experience. When asked if she felt different since the beginning of the program, Donna says she feels more confident.
鈥淚 learned more about my disability doing my presentation,鈥 she explains. 鈥淚鈥檓 finding it easier now to ask for help.鈥
While participating in Creative Employment Options, our Assistive Technology Specialist taught Donna how to use the C-Pen, a pen scanner she had received from another organization that makes it easier to read for people with dyslexia, to better support her during employment.
Donna then participated in a work placement and obtained valuable skills and knowledge. During the placement, she reflected on and explored different career options. She broadened her interests and learned to apply for jobs within her skillset and experience.
After her placement, Donna landed a number of interviews. Her preparation, determination, and confidence paid off as she accepted an offer to be a Medical Office Secretary. She is responsible for scheduling appointments, answering phones, and providing excellent customer service to patients. Although it was new territory for her, she hit the ground running and has already been commended for her hard work, motivation, and willingness to learn.
