Digital Jumpstart Opens Up Robert鈥檚 World

March 10, 2021

Robert has a learning disability and a hearing impairment. He does not read or write.

After six hard months at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Robert joined the program. As part of his individual vocational plan, he then joined Neil Squire鈥檚 Digital Jumpstart program to learn computer skills.

Robert holding up his completion certificateThrough Digital Jumpstart, he received a new laptop to learn on, as well as access to some computer programs. He also received headphones, which helped him to hear and to concentrate.

Robert particularly wanted to learn how to use social media 鈥 Facebook, Zoom 鈥 to connect with family and friends.

He enjoyed his lessons with his tutor, Joel, as he gained confidence on the computer and learned a lot.

The newfound computer skills have opened up Robert鈥檚 world. He is able to get in touch with people through social media. He talks with friends in the evenings. His reading skills are improving.

Currently, Robert is still at Colchester Community Workshops, where twice a week he works on the computer and spends his lunchtime on the computer, continuing to develop his skills.

He鈥檚 excited to continue learning and is looking forward to starting Neil Squire鈥檚 Working Together program.

But for now, he鈥檚 “very proud鈥 of completing Digital Jumpstart and loved getting the completion certificate.
