Moses has always been a self-described “technical nerd†and an entrepreneur. He has a Bachelor of Music in Voice and owns , a jewelry business.
Moses has a vision disability, which caused him a few years ago to go from fully sighted to blind in the span of two months, losing over 95% of his central vision. He had been having a hard time finding assistance with technology when he came across Neil Squire through a Google search.
He joined the Digital Jumpstart program, and he says the thing that he benefitted the most from was the “donation of technology geared specifically to my flavour of blindness.â€
Through Digital Jumpstart, he received a large monitor and adapter for a faster display rate. He learned about what is available through various operating systems, such as magnifiers, contrast settings, and screen readers. He gained experience and knowledge using the assistive technology to navigate his new computer.
Thanks to his computer tutoring, Moses has a more thorough knowledge base of Microsoft Windows, and experience with applications for the visually impaired. He has more experience using the latest Microsoft Windows operating system and can easily troubleshoot technical difficulties.
“I can now again do what sighted people, including myself until about four years ago, take for granted,†he shares. “[Such as] the ability to connect with people more readily. Even luxuries like watching a movie.â€
With his business, Woven Creations, Moses says that Digital Jumpstart has allowed him to continue to contact his clients, view images of their design concepts, and again function in a global market. Now that he has completed the Digital Jumpstart program, Moses plans to fully return to making jewelry for people.
Looking back on the program, Moses enjoyed connecting with an organization of people who genuinely wanted to help. One thing he says he learned here that will make a difference in his life and future work was the belief that there are good organizations and people in the world.
“[I learned to] give when you can. You never know who you might help.â€
