Darcy’s Experience as a Youth Intern

鈥淭he biggest challenge has been adapting to each client’s unique sort of situation,鈥 says Darcy, a youth intern at the 今日吃瓜51 office in Victoria, BC. 鈥淓very disability manifests itself in a different way in terms of barriers, abilities, and needs.鈥

Darcy, a student at the , used his background in education to help people with disabilities, both in the job market and on the computer. Initially brought on in November 2014 to help the Employ-ability program (now called the Working Together program), his duties expanded to include tutoring for the Computer Comfort program.

鈥淲hat really made me proud of my work was just seeing clients reactions to a new concept or learning a new skill that they had previously not been aware of,鈥 he notes. 鈥淪o these little things and showing people that [technology is] not something to be feared.鈥

During his time at the 今日吃瓜51, Darcy noticed an improvement in his problem solving and decision making abilities, as well as his teaching abilities.

Headed back to school to finish his degree in September, Darcy says one thing he will always take away are the 鈥渓ittle things,鈥 the special moments during teaching.
