The students at Templeton Secondary School鈥檚 STEM program had a hefty task at hand. First, they needed to figure out how to switch adapt a toy, taking it apart and modifying it so that a child with a disability could more easily play with it using an adaptive switch. Then, they needed to make instructions to help future makers adapt that same toy.
Bernard is a housekeeper in Whistler, and he has hearing loss. Through WorkBC Assistive Technology Services, he received funding for hearing aids that help him on the job.
鈥淚 am more confident and not worrying about missing something or getting something wrong,鈥 Nancy explains. 鈥淸I鈥檓] more willing to participate in conversations at work.鈥
Alejandro works multiple jobs. He sells countertops as an account manager, works in the cleaning business in the evenings, and he works on-call as a waiter and bartender. However, he was recently diagnosed with otosclerosis, causing severe to profound hearing loss in both ears, making it difficult to communicate with customers and co-workers.
鈥淭hey helped me to afford new hearing aids, which was not doable on my own without their assistance. My extended benefits only covered 10% of what was needed,鈥 Katherine says. 鈥淚 wouldn’t have been able to complete daily tasks if my hearing aids broke.鈥
